Over the past seven years our so, the legal cannabis industry has been focused on strains that feature high CBD to THC ratios. Perhaps the most widely known of these high CBD (Cannabidiol) strains is Charlotte’s Web and Harlequin. Harlequin usually contains a CBD: THC ratio that is 5:2. While most strains of Harlequin will still contain anywhere from around three to nine percent THC, the strain is perfect for those looking to treat chronic or neuropathic pain or epilepsy without the heavily psychoactive effects of THC. Strains like Harlequin are the best choices for cannabis newcomers, children or people looking to get the benefits without the side effects of being high. Toxicity does exist in THC, and can be a predictable problem for some patients when ingesting cannabis for their first time. THC toxicity can cause vomiting, dizziness and paranoia. CBD neutralizes much of the THC toxicity, preventing much of it from occurring.

Genetics

Harlequin is a sativa-dominant hybrid strain. Harlequin’s lineage comes from three sativas and one indica: Colombian Gold male, Thai, Swiss landrace and a Nepal indica. Harlequin was originally bred for making hashish, but has become more popular for treating medical cannabis patients with epilepsy and chronic pain.

Taste/ Aroma

Most cured Harlequin buds will smell like a mixture of tropical fruit and mint. When ingested, users report tasting floral tones, mangoes and even dried peaches with peppermint sprinkles. The scent has often been described as spicy sandalwood. The smoke has been reported to be rich, deep and hash-like, which makes sense considering the strain’s lineage.

Medicating Effect

Harlequin’s therapeutic benefits are widespread. The mediating effect has been reported to be cerebral, uplifting yet relaxing enough to treat chronic pain. Many patients who suffer from anxiety and panic attacks trumpet Harlequin’s ability to help wean them off of potentially harmful pharmaceutical drugs like Xanax and klonopin.

In the near future, we will continue to see strains like Harlequin pop up. It’s a wonderful example of how versatile the cannabis plant really is — from its hemp fibers that have so many uses to its delicious flowers that vary greatly. The discovery of CBD could be just the beginning. The cannabis plant contains hundreds of cannabinoids. As more and more much needed testing is done with legal cannabis, we could discover even more therapeutic cannabinoids of which we were previously unaware.

We want to hear what you think! How do you feel about Harlequin? Is it your favorite strain? If not, what is?
