If you live in a state where you have access to legal cannabis, maybe 2023 is the year you decide to give it a try. There are plenty of knowledgeable budtenders at legal dispensaries that can guide you through strains to try as a newbie. There are also countless resources for finding your perfect strain, depending on personal preference and what effects you are looking for with your legal weed. Often, a strain with lower THC levels and/or higher CBD content to provide balance is a great place to start. But here are three strains to consider if you are completely new to the cannabis scene and want to give it a try.

Northern Lights

Northern Lights is a consistently popular strain among medical and recreational cannabis users. Sometimes referred to as simply “NL”, it is a pure indica with THC levels around 16-21%. The strain was first created by crossing Thai with Afghani. The flavor and aroma profile of Northern Lights is a blend of earthy pine and citrus. The effects are what make this strain so popular, as it provides users with both a sense of euphoria as well as physical relaxation. The balance is also what makes Northern Lights a great choice for new cannabis users.

Harlequin

Harlequin is another popular strain among first-time cannabis users. It is a sativa dominant hybrid that was created through a cross of Colombian Gold, Thai, and Swiss Landrace. Harlequin has a relatively low THC content, around 5-7%, and has a consistent CBD profile of around 4-10%. This ratio of THC to CBD allows users to feel relaxed without feeling too “high” or sedated, making it a favorite among cannabis newbies and experienced users.

Pennywise

Pennywise is an indica dominant hybrid strain. This strain reportedly has a 1:1 ratio of THC to CBD, making it a very balanced strain and a great choice for new marijuana consumers. Pennywise was created by crossing Harlequin with Jack the Ripper. The result is a strain that provides both clarity and relaxation. The psychoactive effects of Pennywise aren’t as strong as in other strains – which is helpful if you don’t have a lot of experience using cannabis and are unfamiliar with the potential effects. The aroma and taste of this strain are a unique combination of spicy earthiness with sweet undertones.
